Prop. BB Funds

Share

Bill Boyarsky’s Jan. 19 column mistakenly suggests that Prop. BB is the solution to schools’ everyday custodial problems. Prop. BB is for repairs and building new school classrooms. It is not the panacea for school bathroom odor or frequent graffiti, although some updating of bathrooms is planned and will help. In fact, by law, bond measure funds cannot be used to pay for or hire custodial staff.

Rooting out graffiti, cleaning up daily bathroom grime and replacing burnt-out lights are the schools’ responsibility. Granted, these are no easy tasks. Our own 17-plus full-time custodians have to maintain our school’s 18-plus acres and 120 classrooms and attend to the inevitable spills, messes and wear-and-tear problems that accompany a campus of 4,650 teenagers. But by making sure faculty and students all have a stake in the cleanliness of our campus, these tasks are usually fulfilled.
