Mariners Christian Fund-Raisers Have Hoof Dreams

They are stubborn and can move slow or fast, depending on their mood. And they can pack a heck of a lot of weight. They’re donkeys, and they’re going to trot onto the basketball court at Mariners Christian School.
To raise money, parents and faculty will play hoops Feb. 6 from the burrows’ bare backs. Proceeds benefit the K-8 program.
“It’s a throwback from the ‘70s,” said Jean Winder, activities director at the school. “These donkeys can play either softball or basketball. It truly is the most hilarious sport to watch.”
Each team consists of five players--four on donkeys and one on foot. There are four 8-minute quarters and the donkeys wear shoes that won’t scuff the court.
Last year, the event raised $3,000 for the school. Admission is $2 at the door and burgers are $5. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m.; the game is at 7.
The school is at 300 Fischer Ave. Information: (714) 437-1700.
