Westminster Rallies Past Rosary

Share

There was a point in Westminster’s game at Rosary on Thursday in which the Lions trailed by 13 in the third quarter and junior Tara Moore told her coach, “We’re going to win.”

Moore turned out to be a prophet as Westminster held Rosary to 10 points in the second half and won the Golden West League game, 52-46.

Moore scored 13, nine in the second half, and sophomore Holly Armstrong scored 14. Armstrong’s total included a three-point basket opening the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to two and a rare left-handed layup off Janet Glasby’s steal to tie the score, 42-42, only 1 minute 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.

“The three-pointer really got us over the hump and got us rolling,” said Glasby, who had an off-night (four-for-15 shooting) and finished with nine points. “We’re always a second-half team, but we hate to lose. That’s what it comes down to. We will not lose.”

That attitude serves Westminster well. It is 19-4, 6-0 in league, a game ahead of second-place Tustin. Rosary, a league favorite, dropped to 12-10, 3-3, scoring only four points in the fourth quarter. Westminster switched from its man defense to a triangle-and-two on Sarah Belavic (nine points) and Maggie Barnett (three points), and neither scored in the second half. The Lions used the triangle on Romina Bollini, who had 19 points and 14 rebounds, but only six points after halftime.
