Kia Motors America Inc. has finally announced its plans to move its Irvine headquarters, and the tale is a bit different than reported here two weeks ago.

Yes, the importer of South Korean Kia Motors Corp.’s cars and sport-utility vehicles is pulling all of its Irvine operations into a single headquarters, but it is not a consolidation of space.

Instead, the company is moving into a new U.S. headquarters, still in Irvine, that will be twice a large as the total space it previously occupied in the Spectrum business complex, says spokesman Geno Effler.

The new facility, at 9801 Muirlands Blvd., has 152,000 square feet of space, versus 71,000 square feet in three buildings that Kia now occupies. The move, which takes place in November, will give Kia room to grow, Effler said.

Right now, the company has about 200 corporate employees, but it is adding new dealerships on a regular basis and is constantly looking for corporate staff to support the retail operation. Kia’s Web site, at https://www.kia.com, now has a list of 30 job openings, Effler said.
