My Favorite Weekend

Composer-producer Matthew Wilder, whose songs can be heard in Disney’s “Mulan.”

Parking It: I have two boys, Grayson, 5, and Zachary, 14. Grayson loves to go to Club Disney. Since I just finished working on “Mulan,” that he likes Club Disney is kind of nice. It keeps things all in the family. Zachary, on the other hand, always wants to go to the water parks. I took him and a bunch of his friends to Raging Waters recently. The weather was terrible, but they of course didn’t mind. El Nin~o the Ride took on a whole new meaning!

Hot in the City: When my wife, Tamara, and I want to get away, we check into the Peninsula Hotel and Spa and treat ourselves to a bungalow and some shopping in Beverly Hills. If it’s summer and we have the kids, we might check into Shutters on the Beach and hibernate there for the weekend to get away from the Valley heat. We also like to go to San Francisco and spend one night in the city and one in Sonoma.

Music Man: I only go out to clubs to hear live music if one of my artists is playing. I recently saw the Murmurs at the Viper Room. They are coming out on RCA. Writing music is a totally different experience than producing. On “Mulan” we were very story-driven. Our job was to bring more dimension to the characters. But when I produced No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom,” for example, I had to pull things completely out of thin air.

Record Rack: I usually shop for music at Tower or Blockbuster. Blockbuster is great because you can listen to stuff before you buy it. You grab a record, they unwrap it and put it on right there at the CD station.

Body and Soul: We do a lot of biking and roller-blading on the Strand. My 5-year-old is finally getting into it. My wife and I also really enjoy doing yoga. We’ll do it anywhere in our house we can find a quiet place. We’ve been trying to move for about a year now and our new place will definitely have some sort of meditation room.
