A man was fatally injured in Anaheim on Wednesday afternoon after his car collided with another vehicle, careened into a brick wall and then over a retaining wall, police said.

The man, identified as 69-year-old Melvin Bullinger, was airlifted from the scene to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died, Anaheim police Sgt. Paul Shepard said.

Shepard gave this account of the accident:

Bullinger was driving his 1993 Jeep south on Kraemer Boulevard just before 4 p.m. when he collided with a 1997 Chevy Cavalier traveling west on Crowther Avenue.

The impact sent the Jeep into a block wall, then over a retaining wall. The vehicle came to rest in a backyard in the 1700 block of Pheasant Street.

Anaheim Fire Department and Orange County Fire Authority personnel worked for half an hour to get Bullinger out of the vehicle. After being airlifted to UCI, Bullinger died from his injuries at 6:22 p.m.

No one in the other vehicle was injured.

Police are investigating the incident and trying to determine whether either vehicle committed a violation, Shepard said.
