A 37-year-old Palmdale man was found dead Saturday afternoon after apparently falling 200 feet at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.

The man was identified Sunday as Nash Chris Jaramillo, said park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Department and the National Parks Service were still investigating the cause of the fall Sunday, Oltrogge said.

There were no witnesses to the fall, nor is foul play suspected, she added.

A park visitor found Jaramillo’s shoes and day pack on a ledge near Worship Site by the West Rim interchange around 3 p.m. Saturday and reported it to park officials, Oltrogge said. A search team found Jaramillo’s body a short time later.

Rescue workers used a helicopter with an attached litter to retrieve Jaramillo’s body from a ledge in the canyon, which is a mile deep in that area, Oltrogge said.

This is the third fatality from falls at the park this year, Oltrogge said.
