Teachers Say No to Contract Proposal

Share

The teachers’ union has rejected the latest contract offer from the Laguna Beach Unified School District, and the two sides plan to meet with a mediator next month in an effort to break the impasse.

Teachers voluntarily gave up 5% of their pay for the school year during the district’s financial crisis in November 1996.

Last week the district offered to repay the one-time cut in two installments--in October and February--provided it has the money.

It also said it would restore to next year’s calendar the four teacher workdays cut from 1996-1997.

In addition, the district proposed continuing health benefits for eligible employees who retire on or before June 30, 1999.

The teachers’ association rejected the proposal.

The state Conciliation and Mediation Service will appoint a mediator to help the parties reach an agreement.
