Planning Commissioner Picked to Fill Council Seat

The City Council voted 3 to 1 Monday night to appoint a long-term planning commissioner to its ranks to fill the vacancy left by Councilwoman and former Mayor Eleanor Zimmerman, who died June 15.

Bernard A. Gallie, who has been on the city’s commission for more than a decade, will finish out Zimmerman’s term, which runs until March 1999, said city spokesman Tony Ayala.

The council interviewed 12 candidates for the position at Monday’s special hearing, asking them for their interpretation of “business friendly” and their visions for the city’s future, said City Clerk Gail Vasquez.

Gallie was chosen after the council deadlocked on the nomination of Kimberly Apodaca, chairwoman of the city’s community promotion commission, Ayala said.

The council decided to appoint a successor to Zimmerman rather than hold a special election, which would have cost about $23,000, city officials said.
