Wetlands Are Roped Off; Work Resumes on Project

Share

Bulldozers resumed grading on a 100-acre plot at the Playa Vista project Tuesday after wetlands where a federal judge recently ordered a halt to construction were roped off.

Playa Vista officials have so far staked out “buffer zones” around 16 acres of wetlands where work will remain halted until further notice, said David A. Herbst, vice president of corporate affairs for Playa Vista.

But grading will continue six days a week on Playa’s phase one, which consists of the construction of 600 to 800 residential units by summer of 2000, said Herbst. Work there started this spring.

On June 26, U.S. District Judge Ronald S.W. Lew ordered a halt to the filling of wetlands at the 1,087-acre site until the Army Corps of Engineers conducts a more thorough review of the environmental impact of the project.

Developers hope the project will hold as many as 13,000 townhouses and apartments and up to 5 million square feet of commercial offices, including, potentially, the DreamWorks SKG studio.
