Former Secret Service agent David Carpenter, sometimes mistaken as a “double” for President Clinton, was nominated Wednesday to be assistant secretary of State for diplomatic security.

If confirmed, Carpenter also would serve as director of the office of foreign missions, with the rank of ambassador.

Carpenter was special agent in charge of Clinton’s protective detail in 1994 and 1995. Tall and gray-haired, he sometimes was mistaken for the president or as a “double” for security purposes as he stepped off Air Force One ahead of Clinton.
