A Michigan woman committed suicide by driving a car off a cliff on Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said Thursday.

Cheryl Lynn Andre, 24, was heading north on PCH near the Los Angeles County line south of Point Mugu about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when she steered a rented Jeep off a cliff and into the ocean, clipping an unoccupied van parked on the freeway’s shoulder, authorities said.

Andre, of Grosse Point Park, Mich., was found by rescue crews near the shoreline about two hours later. The Jeep was nearby, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Andre was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner’s officials listed the cause of death as asphyxiation by drowning and multiple blunt-force injuries.

The woman, an aspiring actress, had just moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles, coroner’s officials said. In her hotel room, she left behind notebooks saying she was depressed over “life’s ambitions just not working out,” said Craig Steven of the Ventura County medical examiner’s office.
