New Sign Ordinance Up for Council OK
Large shopping and entertainment centers will soon likely be able to construct very large signs to match their heft.
City Council members are expected to give final approval today to an ordinance that allows major commercial centers, such as a new mall being built on The City Drive, to erect much larger advertising signs than normally allowed.
Planning commissioners and other city officials have worked for months on the new regulations, which were inspired by new shopping and movie centers moving into the city.
The regulations limit conditional-use permits for larger or free-standing signs to commercial centers of 25 acres or more, and architectural and aesthetic details will need to be approved.
The change was needed because the city’s sign code applies the same standards to tiny, one-story stores and huge shopping centers, said a city report on the issue.
The new regulations allow free-standing signs of up to 32 feet and roof signs measuring up to 25% of the height of the building.
