Lifelong Ventura County resident and firefighter Terry L. Tyner died suddenly from complications from a heart attack Monday after playing basketball with friends. He was 58.

Tyner was born June 27, 1940, in Ventura. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1958 and later received a degree from Ventura College.

Tyner joined the Ventura County Fire Department in 1970. At the time of his death, he was a captain stationed at Rincon Station 25 near Seacliff.

For many years, Tyner was a member of a basketball team that participated in the Firemen’s Olympics. He enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, snow skiing and throwing Frisbees, his family said.

Tyner was described as a family man with a great sense of humor, his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Judy; two sons, Todd Tyner and Josh Tyner, both of Ventura; a daughter, Jody Agaman of Santa Clarita; a brother, Philip Tyner of Oxnard; a sister, Lynne Tyner of Ventura; four granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Bible Fellowship Church in Ventura. Pastor Roland Niednagel will officiate, and the Rev. Leonard DeWitt of the Ventura Missionary Church will assist. Burial is private.

Memorial contributions can be made to the “Time to Build Fund” at Bible Fellowship in Ventura.
