Upgrade of Street Begins Final Phase
A $3-million upgrade of Arlington Avenue entered its final phase Wednesday, when county Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke presented Councilman Nate Holden with a check for part of the improvement costs.
The $600,000 check, with a similar amount from the city, will be used to overhaul a segment of Arlington that extends from 27th Street to the Santa Monica Freeway, Holden said.
The road has not undergone structural repairs in six decades, he said.
The repairs include widening the street by six feet, installing new curbs, street lights and traffic signals and planting 40 trees, he said.
The first segment, from Jefferson Boulevard to 27th Street, cost more than $2 million because the city had to buy private property to widen the street.
“Arlington has truly acted as major secondary highway. It is absolutely essential for the safety of the community and for many commuters to see this street reconstructed,” Holden said.
The final phase will take four to six months to finish.
