Local Red Cross Crisis Corps Is Recruiting

Share

The American Red Cross is looking for highly motivated and caring individuals to fill vacant slots on the greater Los Angeles division of the Red Cross/AmeriCorps National Rapid Response Corps, organizers said.

A total of 36 individuals will serve for about 11 months, assisting victims of local disasters such as house fires and national catastrophes such as hurricanes.

Members will also provide Red Cross disaster and health and safety preparedness education to local communities.

“It helps if someone is generally interested in a teaching environment,” Red Cross spokesman Mike Powers said.

But it will not always be teaching. Corps members must be ready to immediately mobilize for disaster assignments, which usually last about 21 days. In previous years, corps members have gone out on as many as five national calls.

Candidates for the corps must be at least 18 and have at least one year of volunteer experience in some field.

Members receive a weekly living allowance, extensive training and health care coverage. An award of $4,725, to be used for student loans or furthering one’s education, is given upon successful completion of a tour in the National Rapid Response Corps.
