The Orange County Tourism Council is putting together an Internet site, part of a major push to establish the area as a distinct destination in the minds of visitors to Southern California.

A task force is gathering information to be included at the World Wide Web site. Its address will be https://www.GoOrange.org. At present, it’s set up so that attractions and businesses catering to tourists can provide information that will be compiled and disseminated on-line later.

Somewhat confusingly, the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau already has a site up and running with a nearly identical Web site: https://www.go-orange.com.

Other Tourism Council efforts include a toll-free telephone number for would-be visitors: (888) 276-7130. Unfortunately, it’s not answered by a real person. But callers can leave a message and the council says they’ll be contacted within 24 hours.

Another pet project is getting “gateway signs” put up on all freeways entering Orange County. Design work for the monumental freeway signs is being handled by Walt Disney Imagineering.

The first sign will be at the Los Angeles County border on California 57, the Orange Freeway.
