Science Center Signs Approved Along Freeway
The City Council approved plans this week for freeway signs to advertise events at the Discovery Science Center, scheduled to open in October.
The 544-square-foot, three-part signs will be visible to north- and southbound traffic on the Santa Ana Freeway at Main Street and will include an electronic reader board to advertise weekly events.
The Planning Commission recommended eliminating the reader board for fear it would be used for commercial advertisement, but the council rejected that suggestion.
Representatives of the Science Center and key sponsor Taco Bell said there is no intention of using it for that purpose.
The reader board also could be used to promote other community events, such as at the Bowers Museum or the Artist’s Village.
The council also approved the Planning Commission’s recommendation to remove a Taco Bell logo from the Main Street monument sign.
A small Taco Bell food court will be available to Science Center visitors, but the council does not want the sign used to advertise the eatery.
Taco Bell representatives did not object but agreed with the Science Center that some reference should be made to let the public know that food is available.
The Discovery Science Center won approval last year to erect a 117-foot-high cube that will stand on its point atop the center.
