White Out for the Season

Montreal’s Rondell White learned that the finger he broke in Monday night’s loss to Philadelphia will keep him out for the rest of the season.

White, who was hitting .300 with 17 homers and a team-leading 58 RBIs at the time of the injury, broke his right ring finger and suffered ligament damage when he was struck by Mike Lieberthal’s fly ball in the sixth.

Houston Astro reliever Billy Wagner made his first public comments after being hit by a line drive at a news conference.

“I’m very blessed, you’re out there surrounded by angels,” Wagner, who will be 27 on Saturday, said. “Any time a ball is hit back at you like that you’ve got to count your blessings. I’m very fortunate to be sitting here talking.”

Wagner was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Arizona’s Kelly Stinnett on July 15.

National League President Leonard Coleman attended the meeting, which suggests a deal for the reigning World Series champions may be near.

Jason Kendall was put on immediate three-game suspension after the National League upheld the penalty against the Pittsburgh Pirate catcher.

Kendall was suspended for fighting and provoking a bench-clearing incident against the Dodgers on June 28.
