A 2-year-old boy died a day after being severely burned when his despondent father set their car ablaze while they were inside, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

The boy suffered burns over 85% to 90% of his body. He died Wednesday evening, said Joy Flint, a nursing supervisor at San Bernardino County Medical Center.

The boy’s father, Harold Stewart, 21, suffered burns over 55% to 60% of his body and was in critical condition, Flint said.

Stewart was apparently upset over a breakup with his girlfriend, who had a restraining order against him, said San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.

While Stewart and his son were inside the car Tuesday, the father used a chemical to set the car on fire, Beavers said.

Residents in the Muscoy area ran to douse the flames and rescue the pair.
