United Nations officials said Saturday that a drought in eastern Cuba is the worst in at least 40 years and has caused an estimated $60 million in losses to food crops, directly affecting more than half a million people.

The officials of the U.N. World Food Program, reporting on an assessment visit to the affected Cuban provinces, said they had drawn up a proposal for emergency food assistance for Cuba to be approved by WFP headquarters.

The WFP regional director said he hopes that assistance can be delivered in the next six months.
