A panel of Ventura County mayors Tuesday nominated Ventura Councilman Brian Brennan or Port Hueneme Councilwoman Toni Young to fill a vacancy on the California Coastal Commission.

The Mayor’s Selection Committee took the unanimous vote at a breakfast meeting in Camarillo.

The nominations go to the governor, who will appoint the new commissioner, representing Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

The vacancy occurred because Commissioner Tim Staffel, a member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, is resigning to become a Superior Court judge.

Similar panels in the other counties are also expected to nominate people to fill the vacancy.

Brennan is a political independent who is active in environmental circles. He is a former president of the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and current vice chairman of BEACON, a joint powers authority dedicated to dealing with coastal erosion issues.

Young, a Republican, recently ran unsuccessfully for a seat representing the 37th state Assembly District.
