Roller Hockey Rink Due to Open in Fall

Share

A roller hockey rink operated jointly by the cities will open in September or October if building goes as planned, city officials said.

Construction of the Arnold-Cypress Park Roller Hockey Rink began July 16 at 8611 Watson St. in Cypress. The site is across the street from the La Palma border.

“Roller hockey has become so popular, and these kids were playing [pickup] games all over the cities in schools and cul-de-sacs,” said Marvin C. DeCarlo, recreation director for Cypress. “This gives them an opportunity to play in a safe environment.”

Cypress will contribute $170,000 to the project; La Palma, $85,000. In turn, the cities will receive revenue proportionate to their investment.

DeCarlo said the goal is to make the roller center self-supporting through fees from youth and adult leagues.

The planned rink is 80 by 180 feet and features spectator seating, players’ benches, a scorer’s booth, penalty boxes and lighting.

About 1,000 roller hockey players are expected to participate the first season.
