Crime at Los Angeles International Airport decreased 18.6% for the first six months of 1998 compared to the same period last year, Airport Police reported.

From January to June, 1,360 crimes were reported, down from 1,671 during the first half of 1997, said Capt. John Bangs, acting chief of the Airport Police. Property thefts and thefts from vehicles accounted for almost 75% of the crimes.

There were six robberies during the first six months of 1998, down from 65 in 1997 and 52 assaults compared with 64 last year, he said.

The statistics cover the 3,600 acres of airport property, including passenger terminals, parking lots, ramps and cargo areas.

“LAX continues to be one of the safest airport in the worlds,” Bangs said. More than 125 million travelers and visitors pass through the airport each year, Bangs said.

Bangs attributed the decline to increased crime prevention combined with a public safety awareness campaign.
