Study on Hunger Among Immigrants

Share

“Study Says More Immigrants Are Going Hungry” (May 27) does much to belie long-cherished Times editorial beliefs. No. 1, that immigrants come to California to find work, not to obtain government handouts. Too bad your reporter discovered “randomly selected” families to be typified by a 41-year-old mother with three children. Fat chance this starving mother is gainfully employed or that she speaks and writes English well enough to compete in the work force. Where are the fathers? Where are the sponsors of these immigrants? And if these people are dependent on the state to prevent starvation, of what possible benefit to American society is this immigration?

The Times constantly whines about education spending by California. What would dropping the children of illegal immigrants from the school rolls do for education in California? Let’s not even mention the added costs of having to teach people here illegally in their own language. But, no matter. The Times supports immigration come hell or high water and is opposed to Prop. 227. But it also supports clean air, clean water, rapid transit, the regeneration of Mayan culture in L.A. (May 27) and apple pie. Any contradictions?
