Sobriety Checkpoint Results in 2 Arrests
A sobriety checkpoint on a road that marks the boundary between Port Hueneme and Oxnard ended with two people being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said Monday.
Police officers from both cities screened 853 drivers between 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday, said Oxnard Police Officer Ken Kloppman. The checkpoint was in the northbound lanes of Ventura Road at Park Avenue.
Both drivers were booked into Ventura County Jail, along with one person who was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Thirteen license and vehicle code citations were issued, Kloppman said.
Ten cars belonging to the arrested and unlicensed motorists were towed, he added.
The operation is part of a campaign to reduce impaired driving in both cities, Kloppman said. Since the checkpoints began in 1995, officers say the number of drunk driving crashes in both cities has been reduced by 25%.
