Authorities were searching Tuesday for a 16-year-old girl who allegedly abducted her two children from a shelter and may be heading to El Paso.

Cindy Huerta was last seen Monday afternoon with her 4-year-old son and her 4-month-old daughter heading south on Cypress Avenue from the St. Harriet’s Childrens Shelter, said El Monte Police Det. John Fentress.

Huerta’s children were wards of the court, and she was supposed to be staying with them at the shelter, Fentress said.

Two weeks ago, the Department of Children’s Services brought all three to the shelter from El Paso, where they had been living with Huerta’s grandmother, he said.

Huerta, authorities say, told a roommate at the shelter that she had plane tickets to El Paso, and was going to visit the father of one of the children. El Monte police have notified airport police in Los Angeles, Ontario and El Paso to be on alert for them.
