Limousines, flashbulbs, an orchid strapped to her wrist. Formals make for universal dress-up, but not every dance has formalities.

The difference between the schools? The dance theme. It sets the mood--and the place. Huntington Beach High students were “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” and Cornelia Connelly couples had a “Midnight Rendezvous in Paris.” Foothill High held a “Night in the Caribbean,” while Trabuco High enjoyed “An Evening Beneath the Stars.” Lost “Somewhere in Time” were the students of Laguna Hills High.

“The dances this year were excellent,” says Jill Hook, a senior at El Modena.
