My Favorite Weekend

Deejay Jim “Poorman” Trenton’s weekly “Anti-Radio” show will showcase unsigned bands and independent labels weekdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday on KPLS-AM (830).

Looking for Love: Recently I’ve been enjoying a bar called the Alley, which I can bike to from my house in Newport Beach. The big red booths make the place look like something out of “The Shining,” but it packs beautiful girls.

Fitness Routine: I haven’t missed a day of running since 1990. I run 10 miles. Sometimes it takes an hour and a half and sometimes it takes two. But I have to fit it in every day.

The Poorboy: My son Nicholaus, 7, has seven belts in Tae Kwon Do. Saturday mornings, after I drop him off at sparring, I go surfing. Right out in front of my house, between 40th and 44th streets, you can get good lefts and rights. The two of us usually spend the rest of the day at the beach. We search the sand for other kids to play with.

A Double Feature: In the evenings, we go to Edwards Cinemas at Fashion Island to see whatever is the newest kids’ movie and get popcorn with five squirts of butter. Before we hit home, I’ll rent a video. I put Nicholaus to sleep on the couch next to me while I watch a second movie.

Late-Night Munchies: I like to eat late. There are a bunch of Poorman-style restaurants I get takeout from. Alberto’s is drive-through Mexican that’s open 24 hours, and then there’s P.F. Chang’s, my local Chinese. For dessert, I get a wedge of cake from the Cheesecake Factory, save it until my son is asleep and then pig out.

Cheap Thrills: Sundays, we ride bikes on Newport Beach Boardwalk and get chocolate-covered bananas. We buy fresh fish from Dorey Fleet to cook at home. We also like to take the ferry to Balboa Pier. It’s the most scenic ride and it only costs about $1.

Cyber Surfing: Sunday evenings my son and I watch TV or he kicks my butt at video games. We like to play on the Internet and go to Nickelodeon.com, you know, surf the Web.
