The New York Yankees put Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, a day after the shortstop strained an abdominal muscle on a check swing against Tampa Bay.

The Yankees filled Jeter’s spot on the 25-man roster with right-hander Scott Brow, acquired earlier in the day in a trade that sent right-hander Willie Banks to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Banks, 29, was 1-1 with a 10.05 earned-run average in 14 1/3 innings of relief for the Yankees this season.

Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said that efforts to block the city from building a baseball stadium in Manhattan may force him to move the team out of New York.

Steinbrenner is upset with City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, who wants to hold a November referendum that, if approved, could prevent the city from building a new home for the Yankees in Manhattan.

“Mr. Vallone is attempting to block the city from even considering Manhattan’s West Side as a potential site for a new Yankee Stadium even though an in-depth study commissioned by the city, the state and the Yankees suggested it was the most viable option,” Steinbrenner said in a statement.

“I urge Mr. Vallone, who has already given his approval and support to the stadium plans of the Mets, to allow a decision to be made in a timely way and not under his barrage of hostile threats. I do not want to move the Yankees from New York, but I must warn: he is bringing us dangerously close.”

Shares in the Cleveland Indians sold out in about an hour and then offered fans a new statistic to watch: price swings.

The 4 million shares of common stock the team offered sold out at $15 per share, according to the McDonald & Co. Securities.

The stock trades on the NASDAQ market under the “CLEV” symbol. Investors had to buy at least 100 shares.

The sale made the Indians the first publicly traded major league baseball team and raised $60 million for Richard Jacobs, the club owner. He kept control of the team through shares with 10,000 times the voting rights of the common shares sold publicly.
