Public Hearing Set on Senior Housing Plan

Share

Officials will hear plans for a new low-income seniors housing complex on the corner of Noble Avenue and Moorpark Street at a public hearing Monday.

The meeting will be at 1 p.m. at the Sherman Oaks Woman’s Club, 4808 Kester Ave.

Supporters of an 85-unit senior housing development with 85 parking spaces, to be developed on land owned by Danny Alpert and run by the nonsectarian Menorah Housing Foundation, will seek a conditional-use permit to develop the site at 15126 Moorpark St.

“There is an acute need for affordable senior housing in Sherman Oaks and throughout Los Angeles,” said Councilman Mike Feuer, who helped finalize the details of the proposal with the developer.

Alpert had recently proposed a 115-unit senior citizen center with 72 parking spaces.

To some local residents, neither plan presents a viable alternative. City code allows a maximum of 54 senior units, according to Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn.

In opposing the four-story project, Close cited potential parking problems, traffic and a lack of compatibility with the surrounding single-family residential neighborhood.

Feuer contends that scaling back the number of units and increasing the parking spaces should help balance traffic problems with the need for affordable senior housing.
