The eighth-grade class at George Ellery Hale Middle School presented a rose garden to the school Friday.

The students purchased the 55 red, baby blue and yellow plants with $275 raised during the school year.

An additional 20 rose bushes that currently sit in the garden were bought by the school’s Parent-Teacher-Student Assn.

“The students really seem to appreciate the beauty,” Principal Jeanie Leighton said. “Sometimes I will see a group of them just standing around the garden, looking.”

The garden, mostly designed by students, uses dusty millers to spell out “Hale.”

Courtney Scheuerman, 13, made the official presentation of the garden to the school. “This garden is a gift from the eighth grade to all the teachers and parents and staff who work so hard for us every day,” she said.

A $1,000 Statue of Liberty, which forms the landscaped area’s centerpiece, was donated by a local gardener.
