Groundbreaking for Habitat Home Reset

The rain may be over, but the things you can blame on El Nino are endless.

The weather system has again been named as a culprit--this time for a delay in construction of a Habitat for Humanity home in Camarillo. Groundbreaking for the home, to be the second in the city, was pushed back to next month.

“We had hoped to get it underway in March,” building site supervisor Bob Bobitch said. “But the soil didn’t dry out as quickly as we had thought it would.”

Also, the permit process for earthquake safety requirements has taken longer than expected, Bobitch said.

The nonprofit organization uses volunteer engineers and construction workers to build homes for low-income families. In 23 years, volunteers have built more than 60,000 homes worldwide.

The Ventura County affiliate, situated in Oxnard, was formed in 1983.

Camarillo’s home is expected to be completed in late October. Denise Callaway, who moved to Ventura from Bakersfield with her family about seven years ago, is set to move into the new home.

She is a single mother of four, including a newborn, and works at a county animal shelter.
