Times O.C. Awards $45,000 to Nonprofits

A dozen individuals and nonprofit groups were honored Friday and given a total of $45,000 for their charitable work throughout Orange County.

For the sixth year, the Times Orange County presented its Volunteers of Distinction Awards, this year adding Community Partnership Awards for outstanding charitable organizations.

Winners of the individual awards each received $2,500 for their groups. The winners were: Joan Lund of the Huntington Youth Shelter in Huntington Beach, Dan Harney of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, Jack Mandel of the Santa Ana High School chapter of the Citizen Scholarship Foundation of America, Aimee Best of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Roger Hickman of the Irvine Youth Symphony and Dr. Ann Newsome of Companion Hospice in Orange.

Winners of the Community Partnership Awards received $5,000 each. The winners were: Hope Community Services in Santa Ana, the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, Serving People in Need (SPIN) of Costa Mesa and the Paul McNeff Singers of Fullerton.

An 11-member panel of community and business leaders chose the winners.

The Times accepts nominations every April for the awards, open to all tax-exempt, nonprofit groups in Orange County.
