An engineer at TRW’s Space & Electronics Group will enter the nation’s astronaut program this summer, company officials announced Monday.

Garrett Reisman, 30, of Manhattan Beach was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for its next astronaut candidate class.

Astronaut candidates--25 in all, chosen from around the nation--will begin a one-year training and evaluation program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston in August.

Reisman, a spacecraft guidance, navigation and control engineer, is the first TRW employee selected for the NASA training program.

“This is a real honor and a recognition of Garrett’s knowledge, skills and commitment to the nation’s space program,” said Tim Hannemann, an executive vice president at TRW.

Reisman holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering from Caltech.

NASA has 139 astronauts on its roster, including 120 Americans and 19 from other countries, a space agency spokeswoman said.

Newly trained astronauts receive technical assignments within the astronaut office before receiving space flight assignments.
