‘La Nina’

Share

In reading your June 8 article about the demise of El Nino and the anticipated increased frequency of Santa Ana winds, I take issue with those who now want to call the non-El Nino situation “La Nina.” Not only can that be seen as sexist and demeaning, it does not represent the kind of conditions that we will experience when the Santa Ana winds begin in late summer or early fall.

It is much more realistic to identify that which follows El Nino as El Fuego, for that is certainly what will be occurring here--the fire season as the drying brush and grasses ignite under the desiccating Santa Ana winds that we can expect from late September through next March or April. The name El Fuego gives a much truer warning of what can be expected than La Nina ever could.
