Nowak’s Two Goals Stoke Chicago Fire

Peter Nowak scored twice as the Chicago Fire beat the San Jose Clash, 5-2, Thursday night in front of 7,598 at Chicago, extending the Major League Soccer expansion team’s winning streak to six games.

Nowak, the team’s leading scorer with six goals and seven assists, scored in the 33rd and 49th minutes. Ante Razov, Rich Kotschau and Josh Wolff also scored for the Fire (8-5).

Francisco Uribe and Ronald Cerritos scored late goals for San Jose (5-10), ending Fire goaltender Zach Thornton’s shutout string at 253 minutes. Thornton has a league-high four shutouts.

Uribe made his Clash debut as a second-half substitute. His goal in the 76th minute ended San Jose’s scoreless streak at 315 minutes.

In an exhibition game at Foxboro, Mass., Erwin Sanchez scored two goals as Portugal’s Benefica beat Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, 2-1.
