The Sheriff’s Department found an 18-year-old inmate Friday night who had escaped the minimum-security James A. Musick Branch Jail near Irvine, officials said.

The inmate, Christopher M. Gibson, was found in San Diego County and brought back to Santa Ana’s Intake Release Center, officials said. He had escaped from Musick on Thursday.

Gibson had walked away from an on-site work crew at the facility sometime before 2 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Tom Garner said. The crew supervisor discovered Gibson was missing after doing a head count at 2:15 p.m.

Gibson, who was to serve six months at Musick for an auto theft conviction, had been at the jail only a few days.

Police said they found Gibson about 30 miles south of the Orange County line at 9:11 p.m. Friday.

“Our investigation just led us in that direction,” said Lt. Pat Brunner.

Gibson was apprehended without incident and will face additional charges as a result of the escape, Brunner said.
