Jimmy Henderson, 70, veteran big band trombonist and frequent leader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Trained at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Henderson spent most of his career in popular music. He led his own band for several years but most recently was known as leader of the Miller “Ghost Band,” which played many of the songs and arrangements made popular by Miller, who was killed during World War II. In New York City on Tuesday of cancer.

* Hammond Innes; ‘Mary Deare’ Author
Hammond Innes, 83, author of 35 thrillers and adventure novels, including “The Wreck of the Mary Deare.” Ralph Hammond Innes began his career as a journalist for the Financial News, which became the Financial Times. He wrote novels under the name Hammond Innes. His boat, the Mary Deare, inspired his most famous book, about insurance fraud on the high seas. In 1959, the novel became the basis for a movie starring Charlton Heston, Gary Cooper and Michael Redgrave. Among Innes’ early successes was “The Lonely Skier,” a thriller published in 1947 and filmed as “Snowbound” the following year. His novels include “The Land God Gave to Cain” in 1958 and “The Black Tide” in 1982. His final novel, “Delta Connection,” was published in 1996. On Wednesday in Kersey, England.
