United Wins Fifth Shootout

Tom Presthus made three saves in the shootout Saturday at Columbus, Ohio, to lead D.C. United to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Crew in a Major League Soccer game.

Marco Etcheverry, A.J. Wood, Tony Sanneh and Carey Talley scored for United (13-4) in the shootout. Jeff Cunningham, Jason Farrell and Ansil Elcock scored shootout goals for the Crew (7-7) before a crowd of 13,347.

The win was United’s fifth in a shootout this season and second against Columbus. The Crew is 0-3 in shootouts.

The Crew took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on a goal by Farrell. United tied it in the 25th minute on a goal by John Harkes, with an assist to Etcheverry.

After the teams swapped penalty-kick goals, Brian West scored his first MLS goal four minutes into the second half to give the Crew the lead. But Roy Lassiter tied the score in the 67th minute.

New York/New Jersey 3, Miami 1--Giovanni Savarese scored two goals and Mike Sorber tied a team record with three assists as the MetroStars defeated the Fusion before 15,215 at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was the sixth consecutive loss for the Fusion; the MetroStars (8-6) have won five of their last six.

New York/New Jersey scored its first goal in the 17th minute when Savarese knocked in a rebound of a shot by Eduardo Hurtado.

The MetroStars then scored twice early in the second half. The first came in the 47th minute, when Hurtado got his sixth goal of the season on assists from Savarese and Sorber. Savarese added his seventh on assists from Ramiro Corrales and Sorber in the 53rd minute.

Sorber’s three assists tied a MetroStars’ record set by Roberto Donadoni in 1996.
