The Spice Girls apparently haven’t gone into mourning over the recent defection of one of their members. One of the four remaining Spice Girls, Victoria--Posh Spice for those who don’t have adolescent daughters in the house--was given permission to spend part of Friday with the team. She’s engaged to David Beckham, the English midfielder. “It’s good for me to be able to revive the morale of the troops,” she said.

INSPIRATIONAL CHIROPODY?

England has a Spice Girl, but Brazil has its own chiropodist (to treat hand and foot problems) and hairstylist.

WELL, THIS ISN’T ATLANTA

The city of Lyon has an interesting idea: World Cup souvenirs that say “Lyon” are actually made in that city. Among the items on sale are a souvenir glass for 29 French francs (about $5), a T-shirt, pins and key chains. The tournament mascot, a rooster named Footix, is also available for 69 francs (about $11.50).

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist. She became the first female journalist to be honored with a plaque in the Hall of Fame of a major professional sport as the 2005 winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Elmer Ferguson Award, awarded to writers “who have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.” A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she has covered 18 Olympics.
