John ‘Jack’ Dent; Retired Rancher, Lifelong Ventura Resident

John “Jack” Dent, a rancher and lifelong Ventura resident, died Friday after a brief illness. He was 93.

Dent’s parents immigrated from England and built a home on Ventura Avenue in 1904. He was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Ventura.

Dent worked on his family’s ranch growing apricots, walnuts, lemons and avocados between 1922 and 1977, when he retired.

Dent graduated from Ventura High School in 1923 and attended Ventura Junior College. He married Jeanette Jones on Aug. 23, 1931.

Dent was an avid fisherman, hunter and pan player. A member of the Ventura Elks Lodge, Dent coached the Elks’ Little League baseball team for 17 years. He was also a past member of the Saticoy Country Club.

In addition to his wife, Dent is survived by two daughters, Pegge Bays of Big Timber, Mont., and Martha Spogen of Minden, Nev.; sister Nancy Trevor of Ojai; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one nephew and four nieces.

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. today at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
