Retail Center to Replace Long Beach Drive-In

The real estate development arm of Pacific Theatres has begun construction of a 150,000-square-foot community retail center--which will be called Towne Square--on the site of one of its former drive-ins at Carson Street and Cherry Avenue in Long Beach. Towne Square will be anchored by a 51,000-square-foot Ralphs supermarket and will also include a drugstore, auto parts store, fast-food restaurants and a variety of smaller retailers. The first phase of the project is expected to open by mid-November. Los Angeles-based Pacific Theatres is also seeking city approval to build a 383,000-square-foot development on another former drive-in site in the Los Altos section of Long Beach.
