YWCA Offering Free Mammograms, Pap Tests

The YWCA of the Harbor area is offering free mammography, pap tests and breast cancer support services for low-income women several times a month, officials said Tuesday.
The services are part of the YWCA’s Encore Plus program, which provides limited medical care, health education and referrals to women in English and Spanish, along with child care and transportation.
The goal of the 3-year-old program is to increase breast cancer awareness among the Spanish-speaking community, said Silvia Owen, outreach coordinator for the YWCA.
People think they can’t get help because they don’t have transportation, Owen said. “All it would take is for a few women to get out and spread the word,” she said.
Pap tests and mammograms are held in mobile medical test units provided by Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. Bilingual support groups for breast cancer survivors and women with abnormal test results are conducted Thursdays at St. John’s Cardiovascular Center.
