Applications Sought for CSUN Internships

Applications are being accepted for college credit internships that match Cal State Northridge students with careers in county government, university officials said.

The Community-Based Enterprise Education Program offers students in all majors the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various Los Angeles County departments, said Sandi Silverman, internship program coordinator at CSUN’s Career Center.

“We have sent sociology majors to the Department of Public Social Services and biology majors to coroner’s offices and medical centers,” Silverman said. “Those are two very different majors and good examples of what this program provides.”

About 50 students have participated in the program since its inception last fall in various county departments such as health services, human resources and community and senior services, Silverman said.

“Students work totally hands-on or shadow working professionals,” she said. “The positions are all outstanding learning experiences and students walk away understanding how the different departments in county government work.”

She added that many of the students have gone on to receive full-time permanent positions within the departments where they served their internships.

“It has served as a recruiting tool for the county and a job search tool for students,” Silverman said.

The program was inaugurated last year as a pilot project collaboration between the Career Center and Los Angeles County.
