Democrats, GOP Raise $12 Million

In one of the largest single-night cash hauls on record, Republican and Democratic leaders raised nearly $12 million at separate fund-raisers. The GOP pocketed almost $11 million for its Senate and House candidates. President Clinton, meanwhile, headlined two $500,000 fund-raisers for Democrats. The events supported the Democratic Business Council. The GOP’s 1998 House-Senate dinner drew more than 3,000 Republicans, corporate donors and political action committee officials who donated at least $1,000, often much more. The dinner was so big it required two daises--one for House leaders and one for Senate leaders.
