The U.S. Men’s National “A” Team opened play at the U.S. Cup at Newport Beach with a 13-4 victory over Puerto Rico. Jeremy Laster of San Clemente had two goals and goalkeeper Dan Hackett (UCI) made seven saves.

In an earlier game, the U.S. “B” team lost to Canada, 7-5. Competition continues through Sunday.

Two coaches have been hired at Fullerton High School, Athletic Director Julian Smilowitz said. David Posthuma has been named baseball coach, replacing Marty Berson. Jeff Rohm will coach boys’ water polo, replacing Jeff Hohne.

Ronald Won of Irvine is tied for third after two days at the Las Vegas Founders Legacy Junior golf tournament. He shot a 68 Wednesday for a two-day total of 140.

The tournament, being played at the par-72, 6,830-yard Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., concludes today.

Pacifica’s Amanda Freed, who has a 4.1 grade-point average, was All-Southern Section in soccer, league most valuable player in volleyball and pitched 10 no-hitters as Pacifica won the Division III softball title, has been named girls’ state athlete of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.

Nine Orange County teams will be among 248 boys’ and girls’ teams from 14 states competing for age-group titles at the 1998 Snickers U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championship, June 22-27 in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.

Boys’ teams competing are the Irvine SC Strikers (under-13) and the Pateadores (under-18 and under-19 squads.) Girls’ teams include the Southern California Blues (under-15, under-16, under-18 and under-19 teams), Mission Viejo Elite Mirage (under-17) and the West Coast FC Shamrocks (under-19).

Group play in all age divisions begins Monday and continues through Wednesday. Quarterfinals are Thursday, semifinals Friday. Championship finals are Saturday, June 27.

Champions in each division advance to the national championships, July 22-26 in Phoenix. The Southern California Blues girls’ club leads California Youth Soccer Assn. South entrants with four teams.

The Blues’ under-16 and under-18 teams each finished second at the 1997 regional in Salt Lake City.

The West Coast FC Shamrocks under-19 girls will attempt to win their fourth regional title since 1991.

The Major League Scouting Bureau, representing all 30 major league baseball teams, will conduct an open tryout camp beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton College.

Players ages 16-25 are invited. They must provide their own uniforms and equipment. American Legion players must have written permission from their coaches to participate. There is no fee.

The Saddleback Valley Blue Jays, a 10-and-under baseball team based in Coto de Caza, will play at an invitational tournament June 19-26 at Cooperstown, N.Y. The Blue Jays, who won the Irvine Pony Baseball League last Sunday with a 21-1 record, were selected to compete in the tournament and will be enshrined in the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.
