Turkish Show of Force Puts Jets Over Cyprus
Turkey sent six warplanes to Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus on Thursday in a show of force intended to dissuade Cyprus from bolstering its arsenal on the Greek side of the island.
The six F-16 fighters roared low over both the Greek and Turkish sectors of the capital, Nicosia, as well as the U.N. buffer zone dividing the island. Three of the aircraft returned to Turkey hours later.
The maneuvers were in retaliation for the landing of four Greek F-16s and two cargo planes on the southern, Greek Cypriot side Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said.
