Please assure Mark Mayes that the soundtrack remastering of “Gone With the Wind” represents the use of the earliest and most original sound elements available (Letters, June 14).
The main source is a 1941 soundtrack print recorded on 17.5-millimeter optical film. This obscure format represents the earliest copy of the complete mix of the 1939 film. This track is augmented by the use of the original 35mm nitrate negative orchestra score recordings lent by the estate of David O. Selznick.
These more original elements as well as a detailed list of the discrepancies in the 1989 version have produced a 100% accurate and authentic sounding track in Chace Digital Stereo. I hope audiences will agree.
