U.S. Team Reaches Water Polo Final

Chris Oeding of Newport Beach and Jeremy Laster of Capistrano Beach each scored three goals to lead the U.S. national men’s water polo team to a 10-4 victory over Canada on Saturday in the U.S. Cup at Corona del Mar High.

UC Irvine’s Ryan Bailey scored a goal and Dan Hackett had 12 saves for the U.S.

The U.S. team will face defending champion Yugoslavia at 4 p.m. today in a rematch of last year’s gold-medal game. Yugoslavia defeated the U.S. team Friday, 10-8.

Yugoslavia, which had already clinched a spot in the gold-medal game, defeated Puerto Rico, 15-4.

The team of Jim Nelson and son, Brian, of Irvine won Saturday to advance to today’s final of the USTA National Senior Father/Son hardcourt doubles tennis tournament at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The Nelsons upset fourth-seeded Larry Huebner of Fresno and son, John, of Washington state, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, in the quarterfinals. They beat the top-seeded team of Don Biedinger and son, Brian, both of New Jersey, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1, in the semifinals.

The Nelsons face second-seeded Ivor Man Son Hing of Glendale and son, Bruce, of Pasadena in the final. The Man Son Hings advanced with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stanley Quade of La Habra and son, Eric, of Tustin in the other semifinal.

David Auld of Lake Forest was third in the street luge in the X-Games on Saturday in San Diego. Biker Sherlock of San Diego won the event. Huntington Beach’s George Orton was fifth.
